Fundamentals of Sportsmanship:
Athletes, coaches, officials and spectators all have responsibilities of good sportsmanship at a sporting event. Good sportsmanship not only shows respect for the game, but it makes the game a more positive experience for everyone.
1. Gain an Understanding and Appreciation for the Rules of the Game. The need to be well informed is essential. Know the rules. If you are uninformed, refrain from expressing opinions on coaches, officials or players.
2. Exercise Representative Behavior at All Times. We reflect our families and programs as well as ourselves. Behavior should show a sound value base.
3. Recognize and Appreciate Skilled Performance Regardless of Affiliation.
Applaud an opponent's good performance. This courtesy shows generosity and reflects a true awareness of the game by acknowledging quality.4. Show Respect for Officials. Officials are trained to be impartial enforcers of the rules of the game. They perform to the best of their ability. Mistakes by everyone involved in the contest are part of the game. We should not rationalize our own lackof performance by blaming the officials.
5. Display Respect for the Opponent at All Times. There is great difference between aggressive play and dirty play. Opponents should be treated with thoughtfulness
6. Display Pride in Your Actions at Every Opportunity Never allow your ego to impair good judgment. Care about yourself and how others perceive you.
